Cobalt is a chemical element with the Symbol Co . Cobalt comes from the German word Kobold ore (German for goblin ore), a superstitious term referring to the blue-pigment minerals that miners were discovering hundreds of years ago but could not identify.

These Cobalt ores contained arsenic and smelting them caused highly toxic and volatile gases which decreased its reputation with the miners. Swedish chemist, Georg Brandt discovered in 1735 that such ores were found to be reducible to a new metal (the first discovered since ancient times), and this was ultimately named for the Kobold.
